Carbon Footprint Workshop

SEPS Carbon Footprint workshop

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Science Education PartnershipS is back with another free summer OSU walkabout workshop.

Would you like to better understand the science behind climate change?

Would you like resources and ideas to help explain this to your students?

This workshop will inform, entertain, and rev up your enthusiasm for science the week before school begins. Please reply to this note if you might be interested. We will be limiting this to 30 people.

THE STORY BEHIND GLOBAL WARMING STARRING THE CARBON ATOM

A Day at OSU on the Carbon Footprint Trail

Tuesday, August 19th, 8:30—3:30 including OSU catered sack lunch

Learn the evidence from OSU oceanography researchers about global warming and a “carbon sink”

Take an on-line carbon footprint quiz to assess your own lifestyle in regards to carbon

Understand the role of carbon in global warming by viewing five short and entertaining cartoons about the carbon atom, constructing molecular models and performing simple chemistry activities

Lunch and network with other teachers and the scientists

Tour Kelley Engineering, OSU’s “green building” that reduces the university’s carbon footprint

Explore possible solutions … Is ethanol a good idea? What plants are possible sources for biofuels? What are microbial fuel cells? What are the technologies of the future?

We’ll tour research facilities.

What can you do? Revisit your carbon footprint quiz and make some personal resolutions.

Specific information about our OSU scientists, the day’s schedule, your lunch order, location and time to meet will all follow in May (with a follow up phone call in July). Deadline for expressing tentative interest in this is June 6th; just send a note that you are interested and include your summer phone number and e-mail address. We’ll be in touch in mid-summer to finalize your plans. THANKS!
